I read about making soap in the newspaper one day and could not get the fascinating idea out of my mind. Nine months later I ran across a book on making soap and I looked into how I could obtain the necessary ingredients and my adventure began.

I decided to make my first batch without scent because the addition of fragrances can cause unexpected difficulties. Although I had to stir the soap for almost three hours before it saponified and was ready to pour into the molds, I was hooked. There was something about the process of turning an assortment of natural ingredients into luxurious soap which I couldn't resist. Our family loved the creamy, moisturizing soap so much that they didn't want to go back to the store bought variety. Using the soap I had made, we no longer had to use lotion, even in the winter months. For my next batch, I ordered several essential oils to scent my soap and a whole new dimension was added to soapmaking. The first soap smelled so good and continued to fill the house with its fragrance (lemon, lavender and peppermint) as it cured. I am no aromatherapist, but I have to admit that the experience of working with essential oils have given me a real appreciation for them. Although there are many fragrance oils (man-made fragrances) and they can smell "nice", they don't have the effect on one which the essential oils (God-made fragrances) have. |
It was clear that if I was going to continue to make soaps, I needed to sell them. Thus was Sumptuous Soaps born. |
